Romeo Santos’ Utopía Debuts at No. 1 On the Top Latin Albums Chart

“I’m part of a team of professionals who made this collaborative effort possible,” Santos tells Billboard. “I can’t take sole credit because this is an achievement for the bachata genre, that is, all the exponents of this production. As a bachatero, I understood that this album was necessary for tropical music, for my culture.”
The collaborations-filled set, which includes Santos reuniting with Aventura for their first new song together in a decade, was released April 5 via Sony Music Latin. It launches with 24,000 equivalent album units earned in the week ending April 11, according to Nielsen Music.
With 24,000 units, the album scores the biggest debut week for a Latin album released in 2019, and the largest since Bad Bunny’s X 100Pre bowed with 30,000 units on the Jan. 5-dated chart (reflecting the tracking week ending Dec. 27, 2018 — the album was released on Dec. 24).
“I wasn’t thinking of debuting at No. 1 or breaking any records,” Santos adds. “All I wanted was to release an album that the people would appreciate. Hitting No. 1, however, is a true blessing [and] something extremely difficult to achieve, as we are in an urban period.”
Out of Utopía‘s opening sum, 9,000 were in album sales, while the bulk of the album’s first week sum was driven by streaming activity, as it logged 14,000 in streaming equivalent album units (translating to 19.2 million on-demand audio streams for the set’s songs).
As Utopía concurrently opens at No. 1 on the Tropical Albums chart, Santos-related albums racks up the five spots in the list’s top 5. Four solo Santos albums are at Nos. 1 and 3-5, while the 2002 Aventura effort Todavía Me Amas: Lo Mejor de Aventura at No. 2.
With Utopía’s debut atop the tally, Santos secures his fifth consecutive Tropical Albums No. 1, which date back to Nov. 2011 when Formula: Vol. 1 crowned the list in its second frame, leading for 33 nonconsecutive weeks.
His longest reign, however, arrived a little over two years later as the follow up album, Formula: Vol. 2 hit No. 1 on March 2014, also in its second week, ruling for an impressive 87 nonconsecutive-week run.
Strong streams for Utopía also help six of its tracks debut on Hot Latin Songs. The album’s highest debut is the Aventura reunion cut, “Inmortal,” entering at No. 5. It’s the act’s highest debut ever, first entry since 2011 and 12th top 10.
With the new six titles arriving on the Hot Latin Songs chart, Santos now places a total of eight songs on the tally:
